Automotive Network Update for Friday, October 27, 2023

Date
Oct 27, 2023

OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE
BNSF operating teams continue to generate improved network performance with an ongoing focus on effectively matching resources to freight volumes. Overall performance has remained steady throughout the last two weeks. Average car velocity was up slightly versus the prior week, although we have seen a decrease versus September. Average terminal dwell also improved from last week, but the average remains higher than last month.

As reported, we experienced a derailment near Murphy, Nebraska, approximately 75 miles west of Lincoln, on Tuesday, October 17. BNSF field personnel quickly responded to the derailment site and worked around the clock to repair both main tracks, returning the first main track to service on Wednesday morning and the second main track on Thursday morning. Customers with shipments designated to move through this area may have experienced delays, but operations have fully normalized at this time.

This week, the season's first significant snowstorm brought 1-2 feet of snow in parts of Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota. BNSF operating divisions across the network were ready to respond, ensuring that personnel were kept safe and trains kept moving during extreme conditions. Each operating division has completed the annual reevaluation of its Winter Action Plan, which includes details on response procedures as well as on the resources needed to face winter weather.

SERVICE EXPECTATIONS FOR THE WEEK AHEAD
Winter storm warnings are in effect across the Rockies and Central Plains as a strong system brings snow and freezing rain into the weekend. This system will spread south and eastward as far as Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle through Sunday, bringing more rain and cooler temperatures to the area by the end of the weekend. Due to the wintery system, the Southwest can expect to see high winds over the weekend.

BNSF teams are monitoring these conditions closely and will adjust operations accordingly.
